How to Write a Letter of Condolence and Sympathy


Writing a message of condolences can be challenging but it is important to express your sympathy and support for the person who has lost a loved one. Here are some tips and a format to help you write a throughful message:

Tips

1. Express your sympathy and offer your support.

2. Acknowledge the person's loss and the pain they are experiencing. 

3. Share a favorite memory or highlight a positive aspects of the person who has passed.

4. Avoid clichés and phrases that may come across as insincere.

5. Keep the message brief and to the point.

Format

1. Start with greeting or salutation such as Dear [Name].

2. Express your sympathy such as I an so sorry for your loss.

3. Acknowledge the person's loss and the pain they are experiencing,  such as Lossing someone so dear to us is never easy, and I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you.

4. Share a favourite memory or highlight a positive aspect of the person who has passed , such as I will always remember [ name of decased] for their [ insert positive trait or memory here].

5. Offer your support such as Please know that I am here for you and your family during this difficult time.

6. Ebd with a closing, such as With deepest sympathy, and sign with your name.

Example

Dear Jane,

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing someone so dear to us in never easy, and I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you. I will always remember John for his kind heart and infectious laugh. He had a way of brightening up any room he walked into. Please know that I am here for you and your family during this difficult time.
